AIDS LIFE Campaign

  Hi Everyone,

AIDS Awareness Day will soon be upon us.  I hope you've already put it into your calendars and have started organizing on the local level.  This year, AAD will be on Wednesday, April 23rd, at 10 AM on the North Steps of the Capitol.  Lunch will be provided along with information packets to bring when you talk with your legislators.  The AIDS LIFE Campaign legislative agenda is lighter this year than in year's past so we're using this year's AIDS Awareness Day as just that, to raise AWARENESS about HIV/AIDS in our state.  Remember, most legislators don't deal with HIV/AIDS every day, and some may never have thought about HIV or know someone living with HIV.  Our biggest task is to make sure that HIV/AIDS and all the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS is on their radar screens so that when we do ask for increases in funding or push for legislation that directly impacts people with HIV, a strong foundation is already there.

We also need to use the day to THANK legislators for adding $5.8 million to the state's budget last year to make up for the deep cuts our state experienced due to the Ryan White debacle.  This was an enormous victory for us which we cannot take lightly.  The budget is ALWAYS vulnerable up to the minute that the Governor signs it.  Legislators pay attention to who is in touch with them; but more importantly, they also pay attention to who is NOT in touch with them.

Each of you, and your clients, are critical to making sure that HIV/AIDS funding is protected in the budget and that legislators know that HIV/AIDS is still an issue to pay attention to.

I'm happy to come to your organization to talk about advocacy and ALC to get your folks pumped up for AIDS Awareness Day.   If you need the list of your local legislators, let me know.  It's up to you to make the appointments to meet with them on April 23rd.

Please feel free to call me with questions or for more information.

Peace,  Shawn M. Lang Director of Public Policy  CARC 20-28 Sargeant St Hartford, CT 06105 (860) 761-6699
